Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sandstone. Sandstone is converted into quartzite through heating and pressure usually related to tectonic compression within orogenic belts, this causes streaks and lenses to form within the quartzite. Quartzite is harder than granite, so it is quite durable. It withstands heat very well. Quartzite is generally found in white to gray tones. Pink and red hues are a result of iron oxide in the stone. In general, quartzite slabs are more expensive as compared to some granites or quartz materials.
